Classic boats have a certain charm that modern vessels often can't replicate, but keeping them seaworthy requires dedication, skill, and the right materials. The 1989 Mako 261 is a legendary hull known for its rugged durability and excellent ride. However, like many boats from this era, composite components eventually need attention.
In this customer spotlight, we are showcasing an impressive restoration project by our customer, David. He took on the challenging task of re-coring and restoring a gas tank coffin lid on his Mako 261. This component covers the fuel tank and serves as a significant portion of the deck floor, meaning it needs to be structurally sound and visually seamless.
David turned to Fiberglass Warehouse for the supplies needed to get this classic Mako back in fighting shape.
The Right Materials for the Job
The Restoration Process
The project involved a complete re-coring of the coffin lid and the repair of topside cracks. Common stress points in vintage gel coat were ground out and repaired with fresh fiberglass to prevent them from returning. A new layer of gel coat was applied to match the existing finish of the boat.

The next step- Wet sanding and the application of non-skid.

David's project is turning out really nice.
