There is nothing quite like the satisfaction of building something with your own hands, especially when that "something" can take you out on the water. At Fiberglass Warehouse, the highlight of our week is often opening an email to find photos of the incredible projects our customers have brought to life.

Recently, a talented customer named Steve shared the results of a project he undertook with his friend, David. Over the course of the past two winters, the pair set out to construct two Wyman 13 rowboats. The results are nothing short of spectacular.

These aren't just display pieces; they are functional. We want to share more photos of the stunning results of what Steve calls just a "couple old guys having fun."

Designed for Utility and Beauty

The primary goal for this project was specific: usability. Steve and David needed boats that were durable but also light enough for "senior fellows" to easily load into their trucks and launch without assistance. Heavy, water-logged wood simply wouldn't cut it.

To achieve this balance of strength and weight, they utilized 5/16" local white cedar for the hull. While cedar is a fantastic boat-building wood, it needs protection and reinforcement to withstand the elements and the stress of the water.

This is where Fiberglass Warehouse came in. The duo used our 6-ounce fiberglass cloth on both of the vessels. This weight of cloth is excellent for boat building because it offers significant structural integrity and abrasion resistance without adding excessive bulk or weight.

The first winter, a rowboat was built for Steve. When the next winter rolled around, it was David’s turn. By the time David’s boat was finished, they had shaved off an impressive 10 pounds compared to the first hull. The second boat also utilized the 6-ounce fiberglass cloth.

The Finished Product

The pictures speak for themselves. The craftsmanship is evident in the smooth curves of the hull and the clean finish of the fiberglass work.

What’s Next for Steve and David?

The pair has already started making a mold for their next venture. They are planning to build a facsimile of a 14' Penn Yan Swift. True to form, they plan to utilize the 6-ounce fiberglass cloth again for this upcoming build.

Keep Creating

Projects like the Wyman 13 are a perfect example of how the right materials, combined with patience and skill, can result in professional-grade work right in your own garage. We are thrilled to have played a small part in helping Steve and David get out on the water.

If you have a project you’re working on with Fiberglass Warehouse products, whether it’s a boat, a surfboard, or an automotive repair, we want to see it.
