Restoring a boat is no small feat. It takes patience, craftsmanship, knowledge and quality materials to bring old, damaged vessels back to their former glory—or transform them into something better than new. One of our incredible customers, Nathan, recently sent us photos of his boat restoration. He is documenting it all, step by step.
From replacing stringers and strengthening them with vinyl ester resin and 1708 knitted fabric to installing a new boat floor and adding boat pour foam to fill the voids, Nathan’s process is an inspiration for both seasoned marine pros and novice DIYers alike.
Check out the photos below to see the process-
Removing stringers
Cutting glassed stringers to size. Then added 1708 knitted fabric and vinyl ester resin.
5 layers of 1708 biaxial knit fabric added along with resin thickened with chopped strands after grinding out crack in floor.
Trial fitting of stringers and bulkheads. Edges were routed to allow fiberglass to fold over the edge better.
Tabbing- 1 1/2" bond with floor and stringer. 3" layer of fiberglass
Fillet using polyester bonding putty, ensuring that all gaps, between stringer and thickened resin. are filled with putty. Also, smoothing the transitions to take fiberglass better.
Laying fiberglass
Fully glassed
Floor glued and screwed in place.
Filling the voids with pour foam.
