Orca 301 is a superior grade isophthalic laminating resin. This resin is used in the same applications as ortho resin but where improved physical properties are desired (ie better bonding, more impermeability to moisture, better tensile strength etc.). It cures with a surface tack for better bonding between layers. Because of the surface tack there is no need for sanding between layers.  Orca 301 is pre-promoted for curing at room temperature with the addition of methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP) catalyst.

Uses:

-Boat construction and repair

-Molding, fabrication and repair of fiberglass laminates

-Spray up process

-Hand lay-up application

Application:

-For best results, the resin and work area should be between 70°F and 75°F.

-Work area should be well ventilated and proper safety clothing including gloves and a face mask should be worn.

-MEKP catalyst is needed for all polyester resins to cure.  It should be added between 1-2% based on the volume of the resin. More or less than this will cause an improper cure.  Cure time and pot life will vary depending on percentage of MEKP added and the temperature of the room.  If 1% MEKP is added, you will have a longer pot life and it will cure slower than if 1.5% or 2% MEKP is added.  Same goes for temperature.  Lower temperatures result in a slower pot life/cure time than if working in higher temperatures.  Orca 301 is promoted to gel in 17-23 minutes at 77°F when catalyzed at 1 percent (approx. 1 tsp per pint).

-Apply using a fiberglass roller, brush, spreader or squeegee

-No need for sanding between layers

-For the final layer, a finishing resin can be used to create a hard, tack-free surface. Finishing resin contains wax which rises to the top to create this barrier. A surface seal wax can also be added to the last layer of resin instead of using a finishing resin.

Available Sizes:

Quart, Gallon, 5 Gallon

Drums are available. Please call for pricing.

Also available in low styrene.

Handling and Storage:

Closed containers should be stored in a cool, dry place.  It should be stored at temperatures below 75°F and away from sunlight and heat sources.

Orca 301 is guaranteed for 3 months but should last 6-12 months if stored properly.

Uncured polyester resin can be dissolved and removed from tools and equipment using acetone.

***Always try out a small test batch first.  Working with resin is more of an art than a science***

Iso tooling resin for plug and mold building

We have found this resin to offer excellent wetting properties on chopped strand mat and woven cloth. Perhaps its most significant advantage in building complex geometries is its anti-drain/run properties, despite being of low viscosity- it stays in place extremely well on vertical surfaces. Its high strength saves on both materials and work by reducing the number of lamination layers we need in our molds.

Question: Does this resin cure with a tack

Answer: Yes. There is no need to sand between layers. For a tack-free finish, add wax to the final layer.

Question: Is the catalyst included?

Answer:Yes.

Question: Is this resin compatible with gelcoat?

Answer: Yes. Our gelcoats are made of a superior grade ISO resin and are compatible with polyester and vinyl ester resin.

Question: Is catalyst included?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Is this resin used for mold making?

Answer: Yes. ISO tooling resin is the preferred resin for fiberglass mold making.
